Luftwaffe Reconnaissance Photos
In the run up to WWII, the Luftwaffe flew reconnaissance missions across the UK. One of their objectives was Rosyth and the Queensferry Passage which was photographed on 2nd October 1938, prior to the First Air Raid of WWII
This Luftwaffe Photographs Catalogue WP003869 tells the story of these reconnaissance missions and details many of the sites photographed.
Centenary of HMS Claverhouse
HMS Claverhouse Centenary 2022 – HMS Claverhouse was the headquarters of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in the Forth from 1922 until she was decommissioned on 26th March 1994.
Early Aviation
When Octave Chanute retired from a successful career as a US railway civil engineer, he devoted his leisure time to the study of aviation. He published his findings in this influential book Progress in Flying Machines
He acted as a mentor to the Wright Brothers. In 1901, he introduced their speech on aircraft control to he Western Society of Engineers in Chicago, In Their Own Words facsimile
Joseph Needham’s “Science and Civilisation in China: Volume 4, Physics and Physical Technology, Part 2, Mechanical Engineering; (1965)” covers the prehistory and history of aeronautical engineering in China.

Submarine Mining
History of Submarine Mining British Army was written in 1910 by Lt.-Col William Baker Brown R.E. He was Chief Instructor at the Submarine Mining School. This book is a record of the work of the Submarine Mining Service.
Submarine Mines and Torpedoes as applied to Harbour Defence by John Townsend Bucknill, Honorary Lieutenant- Colonel R.E. was written in 1889. It focusses on the devices and their operation.
The Royal Navy – A History from the earliest times to the death of Queen Victoria by Sir William Laird Clowes was written in 1903. It cover the transition from sail to steam, hearts of oak to ironsides, and developments in weaponry and armour.
Underwater weapons and the Royal Navy 1869 to 1918 is Alan Cowpe’s Kings College London Ph D thesis. Alan explores the reluctance of the Navy to embrace the then new technologies of torpedoes and submarine mines. It helps to explain the sudden demise of the Submarine Mining Service in 1906.
