| Remains of a FORT [Inch Garvie] | Remains of a Fort | Remains of a Fort | Mr William Pringle | On Inchgarvie | The remains of a fort on Inch Garvie believed to have been erected by Cromwell’s army in 1651, by the Gentlemen quoted in the Column for Authorities. It consists of a low roughly built wall, with embrasures, and of an oval figure, and has the appearance of being of an earlier date than the “Castle” owing in a great measure to its exposure to the weather and the castle being several times repaired, the walls are about 4 1/2 feet high and about a yard in width – and is constructed of rough small stones & mortar. It is situated on the western part of the island – and there is no tradition connected with it but what is historical. |
