Census Search – Rehearsal Page

The searchable table on this Rehearsal Page contains only a single page of records from each census year. This amount to about 200 rows in the table. Because this is a small table, the page loads fairly quickly, and the search runs fairly quickly.

The full search table contains over 6,000 entries, so the page takes several seconds to load, and searching is much slower than on this rehearsal page.

We suggest you try a couple of searches on this rehearsal page, so that you see how it works,
before going to the Full Census Search page.

Searching by Filtering the table

The table is arranged in chronological order to match the original census records. You can search for individual records using combinations of Name and Surname.

As you type each character (no need to hit “return”) in the filter boxes, the table will eliminate rows which do not match the characters as you type.

Type one character at a time and WAIT for the table to update.
The filter function may take several seconds to act – it is sifting through a lot of data!

Please note that the filter function matches characters and sets of characters wherever they appear in the data. For example, typing “an” in the name filter will match “Ann”, and also “Jane” “Daniel” “Joan” “Hannah” “Andrew” “Alexander” and “Christian” because they all contain “an”. It accepts upper and lower-case characters.

Clicking the “Go To” button at the left of each row, opens a new page where you can view a copy of the original census records, and an easier-to-read transcript. Clicking the < back button on your browser returns to this search page.

An example

Try searching for “Elizabeth Brown”

1. – just type “el” in the NAME box and “b” on the SURNAME box

You have filtered the table down to only nine entries

2. now add “i” to the NAME box – to make “eli” and add “r” to the SURNAME box – to make “br”

You have now filtered down to a single row of the table.

3. Click on “Go To” in the first column of this row, and you will jump to Page One of the 1871 census – you will find the entry for Elizabeth Brown in line 6.
