James VI and I wanted to be ruler of one new kingdom called ‘Great Britain’.
In reality he had acquired three kingdoms, three parliaments and three state churches.
These deep flaws in the Union dominated the 17th century and led directly to civil war, now often known as the ‘War of the Three Kingdoms’.
