In 1901, the Submarine Miners shared Port Laing beach with a company of Boys Brigade from Bathgate.
The boys were entertained by the spectacle of the explosion of 10, 15, 25 and 50 tons of gun-cotton by the Submarine Miners!
Health and safety rules were a little more lax back then. But the boys had comfortable tents, complete with wooden floors. In 1912, their campsite would become the site of Carlingnose Airstation, the first military air station in Scotland.
