November 1921 – Mackenzie’s first plan

 
Dr MacKenzie visited the course and made numerous suggestions for extensions and alterations. The club decided to lease the lands of Gallow Bank and Young’s Neuk from Lord Elgin, and to engage the firm of C. A. MacKenzie and Coy., (Alister’s brother’s company) to construct four new greens with associated relative bunkers.

The total cost (including Contractor’s and Architect’s Commissions and other expenses was estimated to be under £400, and an appeal was made to members for voluntary subscriptions to meet the expense. The new course opened in May 1922. The following notes are from the Club minutes of May 1922

Unfortunately we cannot find any contemporary maps showing the course layouts from 1921 onwards.
However, Ferguson – “Dunfermline Golf Club, 1887 – 1987” includes a description and map of the course from circa 1921.

The names of the holes match those in the club Minutes; the distances are about the same (they have all been rounded to the nearest 10 yards), and the extent matches the parcel of land at Gallowbank.

The turf had barely settled on the new layout when the 15th hole was swallowed by a second quarry encroachment in 1923.
