The French Navy was represented by the armoured cruiser Amiral Aube, and two destroyers.

The French Navy of 25 battleships, 31 cruisers, 83 destroyers, 1 seaplane carrier and 55 submarines had agreed to concentrate their forces in the Mediterranean, leaving the defence of France’s North Sea, Channel and Atlantic coasts to the Royal Navy.
