By 1918 the Forth Defences were extended to provide the base for the entire Grand Fleet – Battle Ships, Battle Cruisers and Destroyers – all under the command of Admiral Beatty.
A fuel line was laid from the Clyde to supply the destroyers at Port Edgar.
