When the Romans departed, there was no national ruler, so local chieftains returned to power, using some of the old hillfort sites and Roman sites.


The sites of the present day Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle, on defensive hills, and Dunbar Castle protecting the important port of Dunbar were all in use at this time.
